Packing is an essential part of moving, and by following a few tips and techniques laid out below, you can take the steps to pack like a professional mover!
1. Start with the right size box. Packing is not a “one size fits all” scenario. Heavier dense items such as books should be packed into smaller boxes, while lighter items such as bedding or pillows can be packed into larger boxes. This helps keep the integrity of the box intact through the moving process!
Using new and clean boxes is also a must, used boxes lose shape and integrity over time which poses a higher risk for damages. There is a range of boxes for different items and needs, from small, medium, and large, to more specific purposed boxes such as dish packs and wardrobe boxes. Check your desired retail outlet for which options meet your needs!
2. Use adequate packing material such as packing paper and bubble wrap. Purchasing these materials new will help keep your packed belongings as safe as possible. Old newspapers can leave ink stains and secondhand bubble wrap may have diminished air pockets within the bubbles. All glass, fragile, or delicate items should be wrapped in either one of these, and only similar items should be packed into the same box.
Denser items should be packed into the bottom with lighter items to the top to prevent crushing. Crumpled packing paper stuffed into the corners of a box greatly reduces potential damage. If there is any “open” space left over at the top of the box, that space should always be filled with crumpled packing paper before taping it shut. Doing this helps prevent the box from caving in once it’s placed in a stack!
3. Label your boxes well and use the correct tape to seal them up. Packing tape should always be used, and don’t be afraid to put down more than one layer! Make sure to lay the tape flat and firmly press it against the box so that it creates a strong seal.
Label the box with a fresh marker so it can be read clearly, listing the room it came from, its contents, and whether or not it’s fragile. You and the movers will appreciate this during the unloading process!
